Medical Officer of Health of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka said that he had identified 77 underage mothers in his area. Of them, 54 live in Angulana, a coastal area where large communities fishermen and poverty-stricken other people live. Moratuwa is a division situated 20 kilometers south of capital city Colombo. She has mentioned another coastal village, Egodauyana as an area with high prevalence of child mothers.
Medical Officer of Health of Moratuwa Ms. M.M. Thilakaratne said that these mothers were of the age between 13 and 15 years.
Her view is that dropping out of school, loss of parental care, family background, romance, sexual curiosity and lack of sexuality education have pushed them to unwanted and early pregnancy which is detrimental to their health, nutrition and life.
